Storytelling In Your Ezine or Newsletter

I subscribe to many Ezines from people who I have connected with through social media. I mostly do this to study their marketing and get tips on how to do my own. People like Melani Ward, Meredith Liepelt, Nancy Marmolejo, or Kendall SummerHawk, to name just a few. There is an ingredient they all start off with in their Ezines, they all start by sharing personal stories. This may be stories of things that have happened with them lately in business, or they may be personal stories that talk about their families and the time they spend in their free time. Why do they do this? They hope to connect with the audience.

This morning I got a Ezine from Fabienne Fredrickson. She shared a personal story about her husband that I thought was incredible. Her husband Derek was in the twin towers the day of 911 and survived. She said how her husband and her always take this day off to reflect on how grateful they are to be together and be alive.

Right away this story did a number of things. It reminded me of today's date, and then it brought me back to the moment. I was in the story with them. Who doesn't remember what they were doing that day? It is a story everyone can relate to.

As I reflected on this I thought about the use of personal stories in marketing. Using the right story, placed in your marketing information can cause people to make an instant connection, and tune into what you are going to say next. Like this story with Fabienne, because her story put me in it with her, now I was involved. I was ready for what she was going to say next.

Think of your personal stories. What stories could you share that would put you audience right there with you? Creating such stories is the key to connecting with others.
